Miles Davis Album Cover

Bringing New Life to Classic Tracks

Miles Davis’ Kind of Blue stands as a timeless testament to the musicians’ experimental and collaborative spirit. While the music itself transcends, the existing album art felt outdated. The aim of this redesign was to allow the vibrant qualities of the music to be reflected in the visual execution and bring a fresh and expressive look.

Sketching and Brainstorm

Creating the Mood

Paintings were created while listening to the album in its entirety. Various materials and stoke pressure/quality was utilized to mirror the various instruments moving together as separate but harmonious entities. For instance, yellow represents the trumpet as a bold and grounded feature of the album.

Letterforms & Type Treatment

Inspiration for letterforms was drawn from the note changes in the album and physical qualities of the trumpet once again. Elongated, trailing forms come together to represent these ideas.

The approach towards secondary type (shown in final) was to choose a lighter, airy pairing to offset the bolder qualities of the artists’ name and represent the quiet silences between tracks.

Analog to Digital: Composing the Composition

When creating the final composition, the main focus was to consider how the type interacted with the painting in order to further represent the layered characteristics of the music and how different collaborators came together to create a single harmonious work.
